Every day I watch people do things they don't like to do to impress people they don't even like. We're 100% focused on ourselves, obsessed with what we'll wear, what we'll say, who we'll date, how we look, what our Facebook profiles look like, and what other people think. We're consumed and fixated with ourselves.
Of course no one really cares that the world is crumbling. I'm not even going to waste the time it takes type a paragraph explaining how shitty things really are. If I did you might feel a bit of sadness, but your chief concern will ultimately revert back to your personal needs and how you can best portray yourself to the world today.
Here's the problem: This world isn't about you and you'll never feel fulfilled until you get outside of yourself. You weren't created to fix yourself and you weren't created to be your ultimate. In other words - you weren't created to be the God of your own life.
One of the biggest lies in America is that strength, change, and power are all found within. Proven by the millions of self-help books and Oprah episodes viewed; most people think they need to look within themselves for the answers in life.
You're being deceived.
We live in a dualistic world. To truly understand the cold of a Minnesota winter you must experience the heat of a southern summer. To truly understand how small you are, you must stand before something great. You simply cannot know anything completely without a point of reference.
People who think they are "good people" always refer to their lack of jail time, fights, or general amount other "good" friends. They never refer to the amount of help they give to people in need, times they put other's first, or amount of energy they spend on someone other than themselves.
Here's the main point: until God is your reference point you're always going to be missing part of the truth- and if part of the truth is missing I say you have no truth at all.
Until God is your reference, you'll be stuck trying to fix your own problems, rationalise your own truth, and finding your own way. There are thousands of people who scoff at the idea that they are lost, but that's because they have no clue where they are supposed to be going. They look inside themselves for truth. They are their own point of reference. When that's the case you can rationalize any behavior.
I'm willing to bet (which is why I'm writing this) that there's a voice inside you trying to get your attention. Maybe you're like me and you've done everything possible to drown that voice out because you don't know what else your supposed to do with your time or where you're supposed to go next. You just keep going.
I'm inviting you to stop going and start coming.
The lack of answers you've found is because you keep going to yourself instead of coming to God. You are not your God. You are not supposed to be your own point of reference. Instead, ask God to be your point of reference. Ask Him what truth is. Ask Him to change your point of reference. Ask God to reveal Himself. Tell Him you need help. If you don't believe God exists then I'm willing to bet you haven't spent any serious time looking for Him. I invite you today to look.
"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. For, I have come for you so you might have life, and that you might have it abundantly." -God
Amen!
ReplyDeleteThis is so very true and such a great reminder- thanks Dan.
ReplyDeleteYou write this so clearly. This is a lie we believe, that we can do it, our American Gospel, pick ourselves up by the bootstraps. But we are not enough. We are nothing without him.
